Afro-Brazilian Dance Classes
All classes feature LIVE Brazilian music and drumming!

Mondays  ~  6:30-8:00pm ~ Introductory and All Levels
The Fremont Abbey ~ 4272 Fremont Ave N (map)

Experience the joy of Brazilian carnival while learning samba, samba-reggae, maracatu, and other dances to the driving rhythms of live Brazilian drumming! The class starts with a gentle warm-up based on the Feldenkrais Method® that eases you into the full-body movements of the dance. This class is great if you're new to Afro-Brazilian dance, or if you want to hone the basics. It's a great workout as well!

Integrated Movement for Brazilian and African-inspired Dance Classes

In this class, you'll receive individual attention and instruction, enabling you to perform Brazilian and African-inspired dances with easily articulated, deeply grounded body movement. You'll learn to adapt your individual body mechanics to the sinuous challenges of samba and other dances--and how to keep it smooth at any speed!

Class size is limited to 10 or fewer students to ensure individual attention, so please call Janelle at 206.547.0953 before signing up. If you are new to the class, you're welcome to drop in once- after that you should buy a 6-punch card. (After you've completed at least six classes, you can drop in any time.)

Awareness Through Movement®

Wednesdays ~ 6:00 - 7:30pm
Soma Yoga Studio ~ 1423 NW 70th St (map)

Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement classes consist of effortless exercises that create dramatic, immediate improvements in flexibility, posture, coordination and comfort. This comprehensive system includes exercises that address every joint and muscle group in the body while enhancing attention, imagination and self-awareness.

In the final half-hour of class, we will include material from Bones for Life: Feldenkrais Natural Movement in Standing and Walking (see workshop description below). This transition encodes our new kinesthetic awareness of Awareness Through Movement into our daily and dynamic activities.

Bones For Life®

Fighting Osteoporosis with Natural Movement - and more

Upcoming workshop ~ call or email for date & time
Soma Yoga Studio ~ 1423 NW 70th St (map)

Older and wiser? This isn't a joke. As we age, we actually need to improve how we move to increase our movement's fluidity, strength, and safety. Through this integrated course, you will rekindle the natural movement that stimulates bone health by moving all your body parts in harmonious coordination.

We all know that our bones are strengthened by weight-bearing activity. But optimal body alignment during this movement is essential for preventing injuries, developing endurance, and bringing enjoyment. When movement feels good, dynamic activity becomes an integrated and vital part of life.

In Bones For Life, you will learn gradually and safely how to:

  • Stimulate your bone strength and experience the "biological optimism" of a reliable skeleton.
  • Coordinate a springy and dynamic walk.
  • Align your posture into safe weight-bearing uprightness.
  • Develop your skill of restoring equilibrium.
  • Enhance the pleasure of moving.

This work will help not only those facing osteoporosis reduction, but also anyone who regularly participates in weight-bearing activities - including walking, running, dancing, and jumping. All ages, abilities and movement challenges are welcome.
